Located in the Norwegian Sea between Iceland and Scotland, this isolated archipelago of 18 tiny islands is known for its rugged beauty, dramatic landscape, wild coastline and resident puffins.
Our long weekend getaway begins with a night in Tórshavn, one of Europe’s smallest capital cities. Wander around cobbled alleyways lined with turf roof houses before your first yoga class and a private vegetarian dinner at the highly regarded Katrina Christiansen restaurant.
Then we go to Mykines island (often called puffin paradise) to spend the day hiking and enjoying striking views. You can get there by boat or helicopter depending on your preferred mode of transport! Our local guide Heini will hike the rugged terrain with us and introduce to the resident puffins. After our puffin day we travel by road and ferry to our main yoga retreat destination on the island of Sandoy, the fifth largest of the Faroe Islands. With broad valleys and many little lakes, low rounded mountains and large sandy beaches this is one of the greener and less rugged islands.
You stay in comfortable, contemporary ensuite rooms in a small village close to the sea. Immerse yourself in a powerful Jivamukti yoga practice with twice daily classes, relax in the hot tub or head out hiking, biking or kayaking. You may like to add a boat tour to Vestmanna where you sail into grottos and along high vertical cliffs, where puffins, guillemots, fulmars and kittewakes nest each summer.
Senior Jivamukti teacher Emma Henry will teach daily yoga classes. Morning classes will be 2.5 hours and you’ll experience a strong Jivamukti practice. Afternoon sessions will be workshop style or more restorative. Each Jivamukti class offers a dynamic asana practice that is infused with inspiring teachings derived from the ancient yogic texts.
Classes will include chanting, breath awareness, flowing vinyasa sequences, alignment exploration, hands-on assistance, relaxation and meditation. Modifications and progressions are given so that everyone will find these yoga classes rewarding but this retreat is not suitable for complete beginners. We recommend that you have previous experience of a flow class and enjoy being challenged by a dynamic style of yoga. It is a yoga style that will require you to commit to your classes.
