CLOSED-CELL MATS
Closed-cell mats (commonly made from PVC) don’t absorb moisture, so the sweat can go anywhere (including on your friend practising next to you!).
When doing a sweaty practice these mats will be very slippery.

OTHER OPEN-CELL - ABSORBENT MATS
Regular absorbent mats allow the sweat to reach all the way down to the base and are unhygienic.
Unless you drench-clean the whole base there may be sweat and bacteria that linger in it.
